Maryland Adds 7,700 Jobs in June

Maryland's dynamic private sector creates 7,100 jobs

BALTIMORE, MD (July 18, 2014) – The U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released state jobs and unemployment data earlier today. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland added 7,700 total jobs in June. Maryland's private sector created 7,100 jobs over-the-month to a total of 2,113,300. Four out of six months in 2014 have posted over-the-month jobs gains. Since June 2013, Maryland has created 24,100 jobs. Nearly 95 percent (23,200) of those jobs were created by Maryland businesses.

"These numbers reflect Governor O'Malley's investments in protecting our workforce and positioning our state to compete effectively in the New Economy. Maryland employers are creating jobs in our Leisure and Hospitality sector, the Trade, Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities sector and the Retail and Wholesale Trade subsectors. Our investments in skills development and training are helping to put more Marylanders back to work," said Maryland Labor Secretary Leonard Howie. "The Maryland Department of Labor remains focused on accelerating hiring and job growth."

In the private sector, the Leisure and Hospitality sector added 2,100 jobs in June, the most of any sector. The Accommodation and Food Services subsector added 2,500 jobs. The Financial Activities sector added 1,700 jobs, the Real Estate and Rental and Leasing subsector added 1,000 jobs. The Finance and Insurance subsector gained 700 jobs. The Education and Health Services sector added 1,500 jobs. The Health Care and Social Assistance subsector gained 3,600 jobs. The Natural Resources, Mining and Construction sector added 1,100 jobs. The Trade, Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities sector gained 1,100 jobs. The Retail Trade subsector added 2,000 jobs while the Wholesale Trade subsector added 700 jobs.

With BLS revision, Maryland's preliminary jobs estimate for May was modified from a decrease of 1,300 jobs to a decline of 6,800 jobs. Maryland's May unemployment rate was unchanged with revision, at 5.6 percent. The June preliminary unemployment rate was estimated to be 5.8 percent.
