Maryland Adds 13,500 Jobs in May
Four out of five months post jobs gains this year
BALTIMORE, MD (June 19, 2015) – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released state jobs and unemployment data earlier today. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland added 13,500 total jobs over-the-month. Maryland has recorded jobs gains in four out of five months in 2015. Since January, Maryland’s private sector has added 23,200 jobs. Maryland’s preliminary jobs estimate for April was revised by BLS from a gain of 16,400 jobs to a gain of 16,300 jobs. The May preliminary unemployment rate remained steady at 5.3 percent (April revised).
“Jobs and economic development are the primary focus of Governor Larry Hogan’s Administration and so far this year, Maryland businesses have created more than 23,300 jobs. That’s good news, but there’s much more work to be done as we change Maryland for the better. Under the Governor’s leadership, the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation is working to broaden Maryland’s workforce as we foster an environment where businesses can grow and create more jobs," said the Secretary of the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation Kelly M. Schulz.
According to data released today, the Mining, Logging and Construction sector added 4,500 jobs, reflecting jobs added in bridge and street construction. The Leisure and Hospitality sector gained 4,400 jobs. (The Accommodation and Food Services subsector added 3,800 jobs. The Arts, Entertainment and Recreation subsector added 600 jobs.) The Trade, Transportation, and Utilities sector added 2,100 jobs. (The Wholesale Trade subsector added 900 jobs. The Retail Trade subsector gained 2,000 jobs. The Transportation, Warehousing and Utilities subsector has decreased by 800 jobs.) The Education and Health Services sector added 1,100 jobs. (The Educational Services subsector has decreased by 1,100 jobs. The Health Care and Social Assistance subsector added 2,200 jobs.)
