Maryland State Athletic Commission Meeting Minutes August 2026

On Wednesday, August 19, 2026 the Maryland State Athletic Commission meeting was called to order by Chairman David Norman at 3:07 p.m. Present were the following: Chairman David Norman, Commissioner Carl Wilson, Commissioner James Wilkins, Commissioner James “Binky” Jones, Counsel Matthew Venuti, Assistant Attorney General, and, Aajah Harris, Policy Director, O&P, Andrew Friel, Director of Government Affairs, Jason Curtis, Administrative Specialist, and Executive Director Johnston Brown, Commissioner Dr. Kristi Hall was absent. Members of the public Eric Davis, Teresa Breen, Brandon Chambers, Joel Fried, Christen Jeter, Tony Jeter, Myra Laniyan, Dominic Murray, Larry Owens, Robert Paxton Jr., Jason Roberts, Shay Simon, Dontae Smith, and Eric Irizarry observed. This was a virtual meeting with Commission members, Commission staff, and the public using the Google Meets platform. The meeting was recorded.
Approval of commission minutes
Minutes were discussed from the meeting of July 15, 2026. Commissioner Wilson made a motion to approve the minutes and seconded by Commissioner Wilkins. The minutes were unanimously approved without amendment.
Executive director’s report
Executive Director Johnston Brown reported to the Commission that he will be resigning from his position as Executive Director at the end of the month. He thanked everyone for their contributions to the Commission during his tenure.
Chairman’s report
Chairman Dave Norman thanked Executive Director Johnston Brown for his service to the Commission. He stated that under his charge that the Commission heavily increased the number of sanctioned events as well as added new combat sports that the Commission can sanction.
Review of commission-sanctioned events
Executive Director Johnston Brown advised the Commission about the events from the previous month. Those events included the following:

A motion to approve the upcoming FWA wrestling event on August 30th was made by Commissioner Wilson and seconded by Commissioner Wilkins. The motion was unanimously approved by the Commission.
A motion to approve the upcoming Micro Wrestling Federation events on September 5th, September 9th, September 11th, and September 13th was made by Commissioner Wilson and seconded by Commissioner Wilkins. The motion was unanimously approved by the Commission.
A motion to approve the upcoming Midget Mayhem Wrestling events on September 14th and September 15th was made by Commissioner Wilson and seconded by Commissioner Wilkins. The motion was unanimously approved by the Commission.
A motion to approve the upcoming Sky Miles Promotions boxing event on September 19th was made by Commissioner Wilson and seconded by Commissioner Wilkins. The motion was unanimously approved by the Commission.
New business
There was no new business discussed at this meeting.
Public comments
Boxing promoter Christen Jeter inquired about when Executive Director Johnston Brown’s last day with the Commission was and who she should send bout proposals to in the meantime. She also asked the Commission about the effective date for the extended eye exams and blood tests would start.
Boxing Promoter Eric Davis thanked the Commission for its help at his event on August 15th and thanked Executive Director Johnston Brown for all of his help and service to the Commission.
Boxer Brandon Chambers expressed his displeasure towards the judging and refereeing during his last contest on July 18th. He asked the Commission if there are procedures in place to hold ring officials accountable when they make mistakes.
Boxing Promoter Tony Jeter thanked Executive Director Johnston Brown for his service to the Commission and wished him luck with his future career. He also stated that some of the judges the Commission use for events need to have more training, experience, and discipline when judging fights to make for more accurate scoring.
Adjournment
Chairman Dave Norman called for a motion for adjournment at roughly 3:35 p.m. Commissioner Wilson moved to adjourn the meeting. Commissioner Wilkins seconded the motion, which was unanimously approved by the Commission
