Baltimore Alliance for Careers in Healthcare - Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Program (MATP) Success Story
Angie Plazas Rincon, born in Columbia, worked as a counter agent at an airport as she was studying to become a flight attendant. She holds a degree in Systems Design and as an Analysis Technician. She graduated with honors and holds a diploma in senior business management.
In 2016, she immigrated to the United States alone and was faced with the difficulty of obtaining a good job. She struggled to find a job in her field and eventually, grounded in her need to survive and have a basic income, she accepted a position as a server at a catering company. Angie remained a hard worker and continued to seek opportunities for career advancement. She eventually started a new position at the cafeteria at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Soon after, Angie was referred to a career coach, Namika Mahmoodi, who works at Baltimore Alliance for Careers in Healthcare (BACH). Angie learned that BACH’s Registered Apprenticeship program is a competency-based program that teaches coursework, while participants also earn a living wage. Angie was selected based on her test scores into the Essential Skills class where she improved her resume and created a cover letter. BACH was able to provide Angie with the skills she needed to successfully apply and be accepted to the Environmental Care Services Supervisor apprenticeship position at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Angie states that she feels so lucky that she joined this program and is thrilled to work at Johns Hopkins as it is one of the most respected and well-known institutions in Baltimore. She is very proud of herself and how far she has come. She is also thankful to BACH for supporting her through this process and providing this apprenticeship opportunity where she can now advance her career dreams, the true reason she came to this country.
