SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Maryland Heat Illness Prevention Standard Development New

Maryland Occupational Safety and Health would like to thank every person and entity that participated in the series of Maryland's Heat Stress Illness Prevention standards stakeholder meetings that took place between January and March. We received thoughtful input from many of you, representing many different viewpoints and interests. Following the conclusion of that process, the MOSH Advisory Board discussed the stakeholder feedback at its meeting on April 3. On May 2, the Board met again to consider a revised draft of the standard, and, following discussion and modification, approved a further revised draft. A copy of that draft, as approved by the Board, is posted below.

Status of Proposed Regulation

We are hoping for publication of the proposed regulation in the Register in late July or early August, followed by a 30-day comment period.  The comment portal will be open during that period, and a public hearing will be held (virtual only), tentatively scheduled for Friday, August 16, 2024, at 1:00 p.m. A link will be posted here when available.

Resources

MOSH is one of 28 OSHA-approved State Plans, and is funded with federal and special funds. Section 18 of the OSH Act encourages states to develop and operate their own job safety and health programs.

MOSH staff develop and propose rules and regulations, with the assistance of the MOSH Advisory Board, to prevent injuries and occupational diseases in every occupation or place of employment in Maryland.

MOSH has jurisdiction over all public and private sector workplaces in Maryland with the following exceptions:

  • An employee of the federal government or its units
  • An employee whose occupational safety and health is protected under:
    • The Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977
    • The Longshore and Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act
    • The Atomic Energy Act of 1954

MOSH works to improve the safety and health of Maryland’s workforce in both the public and private sector by:

  • providing consultation services
  • offering outreach and educational programs
  • establishing partnerships
  • setting and enforcing standards
  • encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and healthy
