Holiday Safety - MOSH

The holiday season is a busy time, but safety hazards are still a concern. As the holiday shopping season kicks off, employers must ensure that all workers are trained to identify and prevent hazards while following safe work practices, especially as temporary staff increases during the holidays. New workers often face higher injury risks, making proper training and education essential for maintaining safety in the workplace.

The US Department of Labor provides 9 Tips to Protect Workers During the Holidays and also offers resources to help protect employees during this time.

  1. Train workers on safe work practices in a language they speak and understand.
  2. Provide hands-on training for young and new workers on properly using equipment.
  3. Delivery services and warehousing workers should wear bright, visible clothing.
  4. Prevent injuries by properly stacking materials and making sure workers stand clear when doors are opened for unloading.
  5. Create a detailed and flexible staffing plan to help reduce workplace stress.
  6. When large crowds are expected, prepare an emergency plan.
  7. Ensure entrance and exit location signs are visible.
  8. Encourage workers to report any safety and health concerns.
  9. Remember: Seasonal workers have the same rights as full-time workers.
