Apprentice License

Apprentice License Application
There are no pre-qualifications for this license. The State does not renew or reciprocate apprentice licenses obtained in local jurisdictions.If you answer “Yes” to either of the required questions on the application, you must provide a written statement explaining the answer. The explanation should be in your own words and cover the who, what, where, when and how as it relates to the question. Additionally, if the question concerns an arrest, you must obtain a True Test Copy of the court record. Both documents then need to be sent to the Board using the upload link below.
Journeyperson License
Currently there are no provisions to reciprocate a journeyperson license obtained out of state. You MUST apply for an Original License – By Examination.
Apply for an Original License – By Examination
To take a journeyperson electrician's license examination, the applicant must have been engaged or employed regularly and principally in providing electrical services for all types of electrical equipment and apparatuses and for at least four years be under the direction and supervision of:
- A master electrician, or
- A similarly qualified employee of a governmental unit.

Journeyman License Application
Apply for a Reciprocal License – By Local Examination
To reciprocate your VALID journeyperson electrician’s license that was obtained by examination in a local jurisdiction you must meet the following criteria:
- Your local license/registration MUST be valid; and
- You MUST have obtained the license/registration by examination; and
- You have been licensed/registered in the local jurisdiction for a minimum of 1 year; and
- Your local license/registration MUST state it is a journeyperson level license.

Reciprocity Application
After you have completed the application and paid the fee, request a letter of verification of licensure/registration from the jurisdiction in which you were licensed in. The letter must show the following information:
- The date the license/registration was first issued; and
- Your current expiration date; and
- You received the license/registration by examination and the date of examination; and
- Any disciplinary history.
You must upload the letter of verification and a copy of your current license/registration to the link below
On-line Document Submittal

Apply for a Reciprocal License – By Out of State License
The State of Maryland currently only reciprocates a journeyman license with the State of Virginia.
To reciprocate your VALID journeyperson electrician’s license that was obtained by examination or a Virginia Apprenticeship in the State of Virginia you must meet the following criteria:
- Your Virginia license MUST be valid; and
- You MUST have obtained the license by examination or a Virginia apprenticeship program; and
- You have been licensed for a minimum of 1 year; and
- Your license MUST state it is a journeyperson level license.

Apply for a Journeyman License – By Apprenticeship Program
To obtain your journeyperson electrician's license without an examination, the applicant must have completed an apprenticeship program that was approved by the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council (MATC) or the Federal Office of Apprenticeship (FOA).
The State board shall waive the experience and examination requirements for an application for a journeyperson electrician license if the applicant:
- Provides written proof that the applicant has successfully completed an electrician apprenticeship program approved by the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Council or the Federal Office of Apprenticeship that consists of:
- At least 576 classroom hours; and
- 8,000 hours of work experience.
- Receives the certificate within two years of applying to the Board.

Please be advised the MATC and FOA certificates are, by Statute the only certificate we can accept. Please send a copy of the certificate. If you send the original certificate you will not receive it back. If you can not locate your certificate please send an email indicating the apprenticeship program you completed and the date of completion.

Master License
Apply for a Master License – By Examination
To take a master electrician's license examination, the applicant must have been engaged or employed regularly and principally in providing electrical services for all types of electrical equipment and apparatuses for at least seven years under the direction and supervision of:
- a master electrician, or
- a similarly qualified employee of a governmental unit.
The state board may allow an applicant up to three years of credit towards the required experience with proof that the applicant has completed a formal course of study or professional training in electrical installation comparable to the required experience.

Apply for a Master License – By Reciprocity
If you hold a current State master electrician license, you do not need to do anything else. Some local jurisdictions are charging an additional registration fee in order to obtain a permit. Please check with the local jurisdiction regarding registration requirements.
