Requirements

Candidates must meet the meet the educational/experience requirements in either (b), (c), (d), or (e) below:

§ 9-303. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The categories available to apply for licensure are:

OPTION B – 2 YEARS EXPERIENCE (ACCREDITED DEGREE: LAAB)
An applicant qualifies under this section if the applicant:

  • (1) has graduated from a college or school of landscape architecture that holds accredited status from the national Landscape Architectural Accreditation Board; and
  • (2) has at least 2 years of work experience in landscape architecture that is:
    • (i) under the responsible charge of a licensed landscape architect or other authorized individual; and
    • (ii) otherwise satisfactory to the Board.

OPTION C – 4 YEARS EXPERIENCE (ACCREDITED DEGREE: DESIGN DISCIPLINE)
An applicant qualifies under this section if the applicant:

  • (1) has graduated on completion of at least a 4-year curriculum in a design-related discipline from a college or university that is accredited by, or is a constituent unit of an institution accredited by, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools or the equivalent regional accrediting association of other regional areas; and
  • (2) has at least 4 years of work experience in landscape architecture that is:
    • (i) under the responsible charge of a licensed landscape architect or other authorized individual; and
    • (ii) otherwise satisfactory to the Board.

OPTION D – 6 YEARS EXPERIENCE (ACCREDITED DEGREE: ANY DISCIPLINE)
An applicant qualifies under this section if the applicant:

  • (1) has graduated on completion of at least a 4-year curriculum in a nondesign-related discipline from a college or university that is accredited by, or is a constituent unit of an institution accredited by, the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools or the equivalent regional accrediting association of other regional areas; and
  • (2) has at least 6 years of practical work experience in landscape architecture that is:
    • (i) under the responsible charge of a licensed landscape architect or other authorized individual; and
    • (ii) otherwise satisfactory to the Board.

OPTION E – 8 YEARS EXPERIENCE (NO DEGREE)

  • (1) An applicant qualifies under this section if the applicant:
    • (i) is a high school graduate or the equivalent; and
    • (ii) has at least 8 years of practical work experience in landscape architecture that is:
      1. under the responsible charge of a licensed landscape architect or other authorized individual; and
      2. otherwise satisfactory to the Board.
  • (2) The Board may count each full year of study at a college or school of landscape architecture that meets the criteria set forth in subsection (b) of this section as one of the years of the work experience required under this subsection.

Application Process

  1. Download the Application for Examination Apply for the L.A.R.E.
  2. Complete the application and send it to the Board’s office. If you have a Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards (CLARB) Council, you can have that transmitted, as well.
  3. When your application is complete, it will be reviewed by the Board. You will receive a letter from the Board notifying you that your application has been approved.
  4. The Board will then notify CLARB that you are pre-approved. At that time, you can register for the exam.
  5. Check CLARB'S website for exam dates and deadlines.

The filing deadline for first-time candidates is 90 days prior to the examination date. First-time applicants must have an original transcript sent directly from the school to the State Board. The application, fee, and all other supporting documentation must all be received by the 90-day deadline. Postmarks are not acceptable.

Approved candidates will be notified of their eligibility to take the L.A.R.E and provided instructions on how to register for the exam.

Exam FAQ's and Study Materials

Pass/Fail Notification
CLARB will notify you of your exam results. Check the CLARB website for release dates.

Landscape Architect License
Candidates who have successfully completed all sections of the L.A.R.E will receive instructions explaining how to file online for a Landscape Architect license in Maryland. Licenses expire 2 years from the date of issuance.

Americans with Disabilities
Requests for special testing accommodations must be reviewed and approved by CLARB and must be received no later than 60 days prior to the exam administration. Contact CLARB through their website. If you are requesting special testing accommodations, send the original documents to CLARB and send a copy to the Maryland Board, ATTN: Exam Coordinator, 1100 N.
