State Announces National Apprenticeship Week Event Schedule
November 12-18 Celebration Promotes Successful “Earn While You Learn” Program
BALTIMORE (Nov. 5, 2018) – Governor Larry Hogan and Labor Secretary Kelly M. Schulz today announced Maryland’s schedule of events to be held during this year’s National Apprenticeship Week, November 12 - 18. An annual nationwide celebration, National Apprenticeship Week launched in 2015 to promote new apprenticeship opportunities, honor apprenticeship leaders and apprentices, and celebrate apprenticeship successes.
Apprenticeships are full-time jobs that include on-the-job training and classroom instruction, allowing apprentices to earn while they learn. This workforce development tool can be used in any industry and any occupation, and provides alternative pathways that give Marylanders more options for getting involved in a field, investing in an occupation, and growing in a profession.
“Our administration is committed to expanding opportunities and building lasting career pathways for all Marylanders,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “During National Apprenticeship Week, we celebrate the success of the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Program, which includes more than 10,000 registered apprentices, and highlight apprenticeship as a powerful tool for employers that strengthens our workforce and boosts the competitiveness of our state’s thriving economy.”
Maryland’s 2018 National Apprenticeship Week, themed Apprenticeship Works!, will highlight how registered apprenticeships can be successfully employed in any industry and are available to all Marylanders. Throughout the week, the Maryland Department of Labor will participate in 18 events around the state, including a career fair, skilled craft union open house, youth apprenticeship information session, and manufacturers’ roundtable.
“If you want to attract qualified talent to your business or develop a new career pathway, consider attending one of Maryland’s National Apprenticeship Week events,” said Secretary Schulz. “The people who have been a part of the program will tell you that apprenticeship works and that it is changing the way we do business.”
Maryland’s signature Apprenticeship Week event is the state’s sponsor appreciation event. The first of its kind, the event celebrates the state’s more than 150 apprenticeship sponsors and partners who have helped make the program a success. The event will honor sponsors who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to expanding apprenticeship opportunities in Maryland. In addition, the state will make announcements about the future of apprenticeship in Maryland.

In September, Governor Hogan announced that Maryland has reached more than 10,000 registered apprentices currently earning and learning in the Maryland Apprenticeship and Training Program – the highest participation rate since 2008. This year, 23 new apprenticeship programs have been created and 11 programs reactivated – the most since 2003.
