Maryland Adds 700 Jobs in August / Unemployment Rate Remains Steady
BALTIMORE, MD (September 20, 2016) – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released state jobs and unemployment data earlier today. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland added 700 jobs over-the-month. Six months in 2016 have posted over-the-month job gains. Maryland’s preliminary jobs estimate for July was revised by BLS from a gain of 2,800 to no loss or gain of jobs.
Maryland's August unemployment rate held steady at 4.3 percent.
"Along with this month's jobs growth, the Maryland Department of Labor is proud to announce that last week, we were awarded more than $2 million in USDOL grant funding to improve employment opportunities for adults and youth with disabilities. This award is already being put to good use. We're creating more partnerships and working more collaboratively across numerous systems to better assist Marylanders with disabilities, in securing meaningful employment," said Maryland Labor Secretary Kelly M. Schulz.
According to the data released today, the Trade, Transportation, and Utilities Supersector added 2,200 jobs. (The Wholesale Trade Sector gained 1,300 jobs, the Retail Trade Sector decreased by 100 jobs and the Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities Sector gained 1,000 jobs.)
The Leisure and Hospitality Supersector added 1,900 jobs. (The Arts, Entertainment and Recreation Sector gained 1,100 jobs and the Accommodation and Food Services Sector gained 800 jobs.)
