Maryland Adds 3,900 Jobs, Unemployment Rate Remains at 3.3%
Reflects Employment Situation Prior to COVID-19
BALTIMORE (March 27, 2020) – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released state jobs and unemployment data today. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland added 3,900 jobs and the unemployment rate remains at 3.3% for the second month in a row.
“Maryland’s business community plays a critical role in the ensuring the strength and stability of our state’s economy,” said Lt. Governor Boyd K. Rutherford. “As our administration responds to the rapidly evolving coronavirus outbreak, we remain dedicated to connecting businesses with the resources and support they need to continue operations, keep their employees working, and emerge from this public health emergency together.”
Last month, the Professional and Business Services sector experienced the most growth with an increase of 1,900 jobs. The Leisure and Hospitality sector increased by 1,300 jobs based on jobs growth in the Accommodation and Food Services (800) and Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation (500) subsectors.
“The Hogan-Rutherford administration allocated $7 million to launch the new COVID-19 Layoff Aversion Fund, which is proactively supporting Maryland’s small businesses and workers who are undergoing financial stresses during these unprecedented times,” said Maryland Department of Labor Secretary Tiffany P. Robinson. “I strongly urge businesses to learn more about the many other financial assistance programs available in Maryland by visiting Business Express website.”
Other sectors that experienced growth include: Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (800); Financial Activities (700); Mining, Logging, and Construction (400); and Manufacturing (300).
The Information sector decreased by 500 jobs and the Education and Health Services sector decreased by 100 jobs.
January’s preliminary jobs estimate was revised upwards by 1,600 jobs, from a gain of 11,000 jobs to a gain of 12,600 jobs.
