Maryland Businesses Add 7,500 Jobs in January
BALTIMORE, MD (March 13, 2017) – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released state jobs and unemployment data earlier today. According to the January preliminary survey data, Maryland added 6.700 total jobs over-the-month. The private sector added 7,500 jobs. Maryland’s preliminary jobs estimate for December 2016 was revised by BLS from a gain of 900 jobs pre-benchmark to a gain of 8,600 jobs.
The unemployment rate held steady at 4.2 percent.
"For the last two years, our administration has been laser-focused on bringing jobs and businesses back to Maryland," said Governor Larry Hogan. "These latest jobs numbers show that this hard work is paying off, and making a difference for Marylanders and their families across the state. We remain as committed as ever to growing the private sector and putting people back to work."
"Since Governor Hogan declared that Maryland is open for business in 2015, the state’s economy has added over 97,000 new jobs! This month, Maryland businesses created 7,500 jobs, as we continue to see tremendous progress toward ensuring our citizens have jobs and a strong economy,” said Maryland Labor Secretary Kelly M. Schulz. "At the Maryland Department of Labor, we're equipping Maryland workers with the skills that businesses need to thrive through our workforce programs and new initiatives.”
The Leisure and Hospitality Sector increased by 3,900 jobs.(The Accommodation and Food Services subsector increased by 5,900 jobs and the Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation subsector decreased by 2,000 jobs.) The Trade, Transportation, and Utilities Sector increased by 3,600 jobs. (The Wholesale Trade subsector increased by 1,100 jobs, the Retail Trade subsector increased by 6,500 jobs and the Transportation, Warehousing, and Utilities subsector decreased by 4,000 jobs.) Mining, Logging and Construction Sector increased by 1,800 jobs.
