Maryland Adds 3,800 Jobs in November

Unemployment rate driven down from 6 percent to 5.6 percent

BALTIMORE, MD (December 19, 2014) – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released state jobs and unemployment data earlier today. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland added 3,800 total jobs over-the-month with 74 percent (2,800 jobs) coming from the private sector. The private sector added 2,800 jobs over-the-month. Since January, Maryland's private sector has added 16,500 jobs. The November preliminary unemployment rate was driven down from 6.0 percent to 5.6 percent, which is better than the national unemployment rate.

Maryland's preliminary jobs estimate for October was revised by BLS from an increase of 1,400 jobs to a gain of 2,800 jobs. Maryland's October unemployment rate was unchanged with revision, at 6.0 percent.

"We've made better choices, and earned better results during this Administration," said Governor O'Malley. "Every choice we make is about creating good-paying jobs, expanding opportunity and strengthening Maryland's families. The most important job we create is the next one."

According to the data released today, the Trade, Transportation and Utilities sector added 2,600 jobs in November--the most of any sector. (Subsector Retail Trade added 200 jobs. The Transportation, Warehousing and Utilities subsector gained 1,400 jobs. The Wholesale Trade subsector added 1,000 jobs.) The Professional and Business Services sector gained 1,200 jobs. (The Administrative and Support Services subsector added 3,300 jobs.) The Other Services sector added 800 jobs. The Mining, Logging and Construction sector gained 300 jobs in November.
