Maryland Gained 8,400 Jobs and Unemployment Rate Decreased to 5.4% in November

Maryland added jobs more than twice as fast as the rest of the U.S.

BALTIMORE, MD (December 17, 2021) – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released state jobs and unemployment data today. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland gained 8,400 jobs and the unemployment rate decreased to 5.4% in November. This is the lowest unemployment rate since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In November, Maryland added jobs more than twice as fast as the rest of the U.S. The Trade, Transportation, and Utilities sector recovered all jobs lost due to the pandemic. Since the beginning of 2021, Maryland has gained a total of 91,000 jobs.

The Trade, Transportation, and Utilities sector had the largest private sector jobs growth with 5,100 jobs. Other sectors that experienced growth include: Professional and Business Services (2,500); Mining, Logging, and Construction (1,500); Manufacturing (700); and Other Services (500).

The Financial Activities sector decreased by 2,100 jobs. Other sectors that experienced decreases are Education and Health Services (1,400); Leisure and Hospitality (600); and Information (400).
