Maryland Gains 11,200 Jobs in September

Eight Months of Record-Setting Low Unemployment Rates

BALTIMORE, MD (October 20, 2023) – The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released state jobs and unemployment data today. According to the preliminary survey data, Maryland gained 11,200 jobs in September, the largest job growth since July 2022. The unemployment rate decreased to 1.6%. This is the eighth consecutive month of record-setting low unemployment for Maryland.

"September marks the second month in a row that Maryland has added over 10,000 jobs,” said Maryland Department of Labor Secretary Portia Wu. “The Department of Labor is committed to continuing this strong economic momentum and connecting all Marylanders to good jobs. “

The Private Education and Health Services sector experienced the most growth with an increase of 4,600 jobs.

Additional sectors that created jobs include: the Public sector (2,000); Leisure and Hospitality (1,800); Professional and Business Services (1,200); Other Services (500); Financial Activities (400); Mining, Logging, and Construction (400); Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (200); and Manufacturing (100).
