Hogan Administration Proclaims September as Workforce Development Month

Highlights abundance of job seeker training and business services available to Marylanders

ANNAPOLIS, MD (September 21, 2015) – Today, the Hogan Administration proclaimed September as Workforce Development Month in recognition of the key role the development of a skilled and adaptable workforce has in the vitality of Maryland’s sustained economic growth.

“Ensuring that businesses have skilled workers and job seekers find the jobs they need, assures Maryland's ability to fully meet the demands of today’s global economy. It is my hope that through this proclamation, Maryland’s jobseekers and businesses alike will become more aware of the tremendous amount of services they have at their disposal as we, together, ensure that Maryland is ‘Open for Business,’” said DLLR Secretary Kelly M. Schulz.

She continued, “Everyday, DLLR staff and local partnerships provide job placement services, resume assistance, and training opportunities to Maryland’s jobseekers.”

In Maryland, a network of workforce professionals is coordinated primarily through the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR). The Department also partners with twelve local workforce development boards representing twelve regional workforce development areas and 33 American Job Centers across the State.

“The enactment of the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act has provided Maryland’s workforce development professionals at all levels of government to critically analyze our workforce system and to more effectively provide the services Marylanders deserve,” added James Rzepkowski, Assistant Secretary for DLLR’s Division of Workforce Development and Adult Learning.

In addition to the services provided at the State’s American Job Centers, Maryland’s jobseekers can connect with Maryland’s businesses through the Maryland Workforce Exchange, a web-based system providing job listings and workforce development services.

Through the implementation of the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), Maryland is poised to modernize its workforce system to efficiently provide unparalleled professional services to assist Marylanders seeking employment and to empower a competitive workforce that continually refines its skills to meet global needs.
