Maryland Developing Hospitality Apprenticeship Program with New US Department of Labor Investment - Workforce Development and Adult Learning

Governor Wes Moore announced on July 31, 2023, that the United States Department of Labor (USDOL) awarded Maryland $6.6 million to continue the state’s successful ongoing campaign to expand apprenticeship. MATP will use the funding to support the creation of the Hospitality Management Registered Apprenticeship Program. MD Labor’s Long-term Occupational Employment Statistics project the addition of 110,932 hospitality management jobs in the next 10 years. The minimum annual median earnings for Lodging Manager occupations starts at $58,417, and 50% of managerial positions have an annual median income of over $120,000. The new Hospitality Management Registered Apprenticeship program will combine hospitality coursework provided by partner community colleges with paid on-the-job learning within Maryland’s restaurant and lodging industries. This latest round of federal investment brings Maryland’s total awards from USDOL for apprenticeship expansion to nearly $18 million since 2016.
