MEET JONAH...
Jonah’s journey to a new career began with a turning point. After facing a felony charge in 2007, he resolved to change his path. He spent years working in warehousing, labor, and security—“Talk about transferable skills,” he jokes—but he knew he wanted more.
That opportunity came when a friend at the Department of Juvenile Justice introduced him to the Jane Addams Resource Corporation (JARC) in Baltimore City. JARC offers skills training and wraparound supports to help lower-income and unemployed individuals achieve self-sufficiency. Though Jonah initially considered welding, he pivoted to JARC’s CNC (Computer Numerical Control) program after attending orientation.

Returning to the classroom after nearly 30 years wasn’t easy. “What have I gotten into?” Jonah recalls thinking as he struggled with fractions, blueprint reading, and precision measurements. But with guidance from a dedicated team of JARC instructors—and plenty of hands-on, visual learning—he persevered. Despite failing the NIMS certification exam multiple times, he pushed forward, ultimately earning industry-recognized credentials.
JARC’s holistic support services were key to his success. With help from the Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service, Jonah expunged his criminal record at no cost. He worked with the Baltimore City Department of Child Support Services to reduce arrears, reapplied for SNAP benefits through the Cash Campaign of Maryland, and received weekly gas cards to ensure he could get to class. Financial coaching helped him raise his credit score from 500 to 700, and career coaching sharpened his resume, cover letters, and interview skills. Success In Style, a nonprofit partner, provided professional attire and interview preparation.
Today, Jonah has a great job earning $23 an hour with benefits. He continues to give back, donating food to JARC’s meal program for current trainees.
Reflecting on his journey, Jonah credits JARC’s training, support system, and dedicated staff for helping him rebuild his future. His story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible with persistence—and the right support. His advice to others facing challenges is: “Show up, be on time, work with your classmates, and stick with it. I almost gave up—but I didn’t.”
