Tameka Johnson started as a learner. Now she’s a leader.
Tameka Johnson’s journey to a new career began with her participation in the EARN Maryland program in spring of 2016. She began by completing a Learner's Permit preparation class, which helped her earn her Commercial Driver License with passenger and school bus endorsements. Immediately after receiving her license was hired by Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) as a school bus driver. Tameka had six years of employment under her belt with MCPS when she was promoted in 2022 to the role of a Bus Route Supervisor, providing oversight for a group of 30 coworkers, bus operators and attendants. Her duties include driver evaluations, performance evaluations and all duties of a supervisor. She works with parents and school staff on various student and routing transportation issues.But the best part of Tameka’s story may be that she is now she is preparing to teach the very course she completed that put her on the path to economic stability. She has come full circle, from beginning her career journey to helping others achieve similar success. And it all started with EARN Maryland!
